Creating communities where everyone can thrive starts with supporting our communities’ children.
At Universally, Inc., we believe that every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories they read, and data shows that children’s literature with diverse characters increases self-esteem and self confidence, increases empathy, and improves outcomes for literacy and reading comprehension.
That’s why Universally, Inc. has teamed up with the Little Ruth Children’s Collection to launch Literacy Leap, a joint initiative dedicated to distributing books that elevate diverse protagonists so that every child At can see themselves, their families, and community members in their books and learning materials. With your help, we’re aiming to raise over $100,000 to provide 5,000 books plus curricula and author visits to children in schools in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Literacy Leap’s Mission
The Literacy Leap is a bold campaign to distribute 5,000 books to students students across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Through this initiative, we aim to close the literacy and reading comprehension gaps. We will also achieve other critical aims such as (1) improving self esteem and self confidence, (2) helping children develop empathy and growth in other social-emotional areas, and (3) helping children develop problem solving and community building skills. The Literacy Leap Initiative will achieve all these goals while elevating diverse protagonists!
Why Your Support Matters
Your donation will directly fund the purchase and distribution of books and learning materials in which they can see themselves, their families, their peers, and community members. They will also be able to meet the authors and other creators in which they can see themselves. When children can see themselves and their peers in their learning materials and environments, it builds their self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy. At the same time, they improve their learning outcomes. Most of all they know that their stories matter!
Your donation directly supports efforts for children across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, including but not limited to students from low-income households and at Title I schools. You also help us expand Literacy Leap to other states, making a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of children across the U.S.
